Ellicar – Natural Swimming Pond 

Set in the heart of rural Shropshire, this project began with a blank canvas—a bare paddock. Our clients wanted to transform the space into a naturalistic garden that blended seamlessly with the surrounding countryside. Central to their vision was a large, concrete-free natural swimming pond.

Ellicar designed a 245m² pond featuring a generous 6 x 20m internal swim zone, a gently shelving beach to maximise thermal gain, a curved feature deck, a jetty, and bubbling boulders that add both beauty and tranquillity. Aquatic plants fringe the edges, softening the structure and enhancing the natural feel.

Despite a high water table, multiple underground land drains, and persistent wet weather turning the site into a mud bath, Ellicar were able to deliver the project smoothly. A key part of this success was their choice of EPDM liner. Its flexibility and ease of installation made it the ideal solution for this complex build. They lined the entire pond in just three days—a task that would have taken three weeks using a heat-welded alternative.

The result is a stunning, eco-sensitive swimming pond that feels entirely at home in its countryside setting.
